NMA demands impartial probe into death of Mizo woman

Kohima, September 8 (MExN): The Naga Mothers' Association (NMA) on September 8 expressed deep shock over the news of the mysterious death of a young Mizo woman, Jones C Malsawmkimi, who was working at the Army Hospital at Sukhovi.

Taking cognizance of the letter of Dr K Pachhunga, MLA 33 Lunglei, Mizoram, the NMA said that it gives credence that there is “much more than the witness accounts of those arrested by the police in connection to the case.”

“That, it is obvious, from the MLA's letter to the President of India, that the victim had no history of drug abuse. So, therefore, why has the police investigation depended on the statement of strong suspects to the death and the crime,” it questioned.

In its letter to the State Governor R N Ravi on Wednesday, the NMA demanded for an SIT to be constituted at the earliest in order to ‘seriously and impartially investigate into the sexual crime against a young army woman in the State’.

“We seek your intervention into this crime of violence against women in the State and to ensure justice for the unfortunate death of our daughter Jones C. Malsawmkimi,” the NMA stated.

It may be mentioned that 20-year-old Malsawmkimi, who was working at the ARTC Sukhovi, had reportedly obtained “out pass” after completing her day shift at 6:00 pm on September 1 and was scheduled to report to work at 8:00 am on September 2, but did not. A missing complaint was filed by the ARTC with the police later in the afternoon.

Her dead body was found the September 3 by villagers, who alerted the police and a case was registered.

The Dimapur Police on September 6 had stated that the body bore no tell-tale signs of injury as to indicate foul play. Three of the seven youths rounded up by the Police for questioning had been arrested.
