Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) today said the nexus between department and contractors making profit from public roads must stop.
“There must be strict accountability to ensure we have good roads and connectivity if we are to move ahead,” said NMA president Abei-u Meru at the “Colloquium on Road Connectivity” here at State Banquet Hall.
As mothers and women, bad roads have a lot of impact on our health and many lives have been lost due to health hazards especially in rural areas, she said.
She continued that NMA has been to the corners of the state in its peace work where there are no proper roads and we have seen villages completely cut off for months during the rainy season just because of roads not being maintained.
“Bridges connect people to civilized areas and we have seen many places where there are no bridges built for the people and places where we have seen bridges collapsing,” Meru said.
She said the responsibility must be borne by the department that is supposed to be looking after roads and bridges. Engineers must regularly travel instead of sitting in the office. Contractors must honestly give their best when doing any road and bridges work.
