Pitches counseling and sensitization for police personnel
Kohima, August 25 (MExN): Following the August 21 incident where a doctor was allegedly assaulted by uniformed personnel in Dimapur, the Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) has voiced concern on the “increasing incidents of violence and assault on health care professionals, especially during this time of pandemic.”
While acknowledging both health care workers and police personnel suffer intense stress and anxiety due to their ‘critical roles’ in the battle against COVID-19, the NMA said that if doctors and healthcare workers are abused, they would not be able to do justice to their job. In this regard, it suggested the higher ups and concerned authority to “counsel and sensitize police personnel who are on the streets.”
Citing the interest of the public at large, the NMA said that it was needed for those enforcing the lockdown to exercise utmost restraint while handling such situations.
“Apart from their law and order duty, police are also equally risking their lives managing containment zones, conducting checks,” the NMA said.
However, it also added that assault on health care professionals must be condemned and controlled and must not be allowed to happen in future. The Association meanwhile appreciated the State government for setting up an Inquiry Committee on the incident, and appealed for justice to be delivered “as per the law of the land.”
NCD appeals for impartial investigation
The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) on Tuesday strongly condemned the alleged assault on Dr Atoka Wotsa by the IRB personnel on the night of August 21, and requested the concerned authority for impartial investigation and exemplary action against the attackers. Denouncing any form of violence on doctors and healthcare workers especially during these testing pandemic hours, the NCD expressed solidarity with the NIDA and to the victim.
It also appealed NIDA to perform their duty as usual till the 3 member independent committee delivers its report on the matter, in the interest of public in general.
