DIMAPUR, APRIL 24 (MExN): The Naga National Council today said it is shocked and sad to hear that Naga leader Yongkongngangshi “died at around 4:00 A.M this morning in England (UK).”
Informing that he was hospitalised twice and was much better during the last few days, the Information & Publicity Wing of the NNC said he had shown signs of recovery, but all of a sudden died early this morning. “The Naga people have lost a noble leader and a staunch supporter for the Naga Sovereignty. Late Yongkong was sent by the Nagas to United Kingdom in 1962 along with Late Gen. Kaito, Late Gen. Mowu and Mr. Khodao for the cause of the Naga freedom,” it said.
“He was a man of strong determination for the cause of humanity. He never compromised in the matter of Naga freedom. And he was a man who speaks the truth. He also worked hard for the Naga National unity during 1990s. He was a true leader for the cause of the Naga freedom.” In reality, it will be difficult to find another person like him who gave his lifetime for the freedom of his people, it was said. The NNC in particular has saluted “this noble leader of the Nagas-Kuknalim and may God Almighty bless his soul and rest in peace.” The NNC has also appealed to “all the Naga people in the homeland to pay homage to this noble leader of the Nagas.”
The Federal Government of Nagaland, offering its condolences, said the organization and the Naga people in general feel deep sorrow on the demise of ‘Eno Yongkong Ao of Sungratsü village.’
“He gave his whole life for his people and worked selflessly for the right cause of our nation, which will inspire present and future generations of Nagas to love our people and the nation,” FGN Kedahge General (Rtd) V Metha said in a condolence message. Saying that “we have lost one of (the) senior most national leaders,” Metha said ‘the nation’ is in deep grief. “The Council of Kilonsers at its meeting in Kohima prayed that his soul rest in peace in the hands of our Lord Jesus Christ forever, and may Almighty God give comfort and strength to the bereaved brethren and relatives at this hour of grief and loss.”
