The Nagaland Chief Secretary Pankaj Kumar today informed that the Nagaland State Government has made no proposal to ban dog meat in the State.

He was responding to the queries forwarded to him by The Morung Express after a news item suggested that the Government of Nagaland was mulling the possibility of banning dog meat in a recent meeting. “Transportation and sale of dogs was discussed in the context of legal notice regarding prevention of cruelty to animals,” he added.

He further maintained that the Government is looking into the issues relating to transportation, sale and food safety aspects with regard to dog meat.

Meanwhile, the Director of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Dr. T Ezung has denied circulating any letter addressed to all Deputy Commissioners on “illegal use” of dog meat as food in the State.

He, however, maintained that there is an ongoing discussion with regard to illegal selling of dog meat in the market and cruelty to animals after a legal notice was served to the State Government.
