NOPG 2024: Volleyball competition begins; to select players for Nagaland squad

Dimapur, February 15 (MExN): The 3rd Nagaland Olympic and Paralympic Games (NOPG) 2024 Volleyball (Men’s & Women’s) tournament began today at Volleyball Arena-D, opposite Nagaland Cricket Stadium Sovima, in Chumoukedima.

It is being organised by the Nagaland Volleyball Association under the aegis of the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) and sponsored by the Government of Nagaland.

District teams from Longleng, Mokokchung, Wokha, Tuensang, Tseminyu, Noklak, Kohima, Peren, Mon, Dimapur, Nuiland, Shamator, Phek, Zunheboto, Kiphire, and Chumoukedima will vie for the coveted champion title.

During the inaugural ceremony, NVA President N Jacob Yanthan informed that approximately 20 players would be selected from the volleyball competition to represent the State in the upcoming North East Olympic Games hosted by Nagaland. 

The selected players will undergo one month of training, he added.

Stating that Olympic and Paralympic Games are celebrations of determination, sportsmanship, discipline, and unity, he also urged all participating teams to uphold the values of fair play, respect, and inclusivity, encouraging them to embrace the diversity and uniqueness of all disciplines. 

Yanthan also motivated the players to compete with passion and embody the spirit of sportsmanship and unity that Olympic and Paralympic Games symbolize. 

He expressed confidence that this edition of the games would be memorable and impactful, showcasing the unwavering spirit of the youngsters and community support.

Gracing the opening ceremony as the special guest, Abu Metha, Advisor to the Chief Minister, Chairman IDAN, and Secretary-General of the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA), stated that volleyball exemplifies the essence of sports. 

It is one of the most popular and accessible sports, played in every nook and corner of the world, he said. 

Metha urged the players to be ambassadors of their districts and exhibit sportsmanship with discipline, as the Nagaland Olympic Games are the highest games for Nagaland. 

He also lauded the NVA’s  contribution and support to NOA.
