
Newmai News Network IMPHAL | AUGUST 22 After 85 days of impasse, normal classes will resume in Manipur University (MU) from tomorrow. The agitating organisations of Manipur University said they have decided to suspend the agitation in the interest of the student community. The bodies also said that the Registrar of the varsity had informed the former of including all the points mentioned in the ‘memorandum of agreement’ reached between the government and the agitating organizations. The Registrar was reportedly informed by the HRD of including all the points in the order. However, the agitating bodies said they will “remain united” on the demand for ousting AP Pandey, Vice Chancellor of the varsity. The government and the agitating organizations had reached an understanding in the form of ‘memorandum of agreement’ on August 16 but two days later the agitating organizations rejected the order of the government saying the latter had not mentioned all the points of the ‘agreement’ in the official order. Manipur University Students Union (MUSU), Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA) and Manipur University Staffs Association (MUSA) have been spearheading the agitation initiated b MUSU since May 30. Speaking to media persons this evening, Mayanglambam Dayaman, President of MUSU announced that the agitating bodies have decided to suspend the “total shutdown” of the university from August 23 in the interest of the students. The agitators demand the removal of AP Pandey as Vice Chancellor accusing him of indulging in “administrative and financial irregularities” in the management of the university. The agitating organizations also accused the Vice Chancellor of taking frequent leave. Mayanglambam Dayaman said they will extend cooperation with the two-member enquiry team constituted by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education, Government of India has constitted the two-member enquiry committee to investigate into the allegations against the Vice Chancellor, Manipur University relating to administrative and financial irregularities in the management of affairs of the Manipur University. The two-member enquiry committee is led by T Nandakumar Singh, former acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya as chairperson and Professor MK Choudhary, former Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University as member. Meanwhile, the agitating bodies have expressed gratitude to the various organizations for the supports they rendered to the agitations. MUTA president, Professor I Tomba and MUSA president, S Jibon Kumar Singh accompanied the MUSU president while addressing the media.
