New Assam govt to be sworn in on May 24
Guwahati, May 20 (PTI): The new BJP-led government in Assam will be sworn in on May 24 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonwal said on Friday. The oath-taking ceremony will be held at Khanapara field in Guwahati, Sonowal told PTI. Leading the alliance, BJP won 60 of the 126 Assam Assembly seats. Its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodo Peoples Front emerged victorious in 14 and 12 constituencies respectively.
Former Tirap SP suspended
Itanagar, May 20 (PTI): In the wake of pressure from various quarters, the Arunachal Pradesh government has put under suspension former SP of Tirap district Jasmeet Singh on charge of manhandling a BJP leader without any provocation on May 16 last. Deputy Chief Minister Kameng Dolo in a statement said that the government would not allow disturbing the peace and tranquillity of the state because of 'wrong conduct' of any responsible law keeper. Urging the people to maintain calm and peace, Dolo, who also holds the Home portfolio, said Jasmeet Singh has been put under immediate suspension as a disciplinary proceeding initiated against him for his alleged wrong conduct. "He will not leave the state capital without obtaining prior permission from the state government," Dolo said quoting the official order. There was a growing demand for the former SP's scalp from civil society, including the All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU), Arunachal Citizen Rights (ACR), for the alleged manhandling of a senior citizen. Earlier, immediately after the incident, Dolo had transferred Singh to police headquarters here.
Assam-bound train derails due to landslip
Thiruvananthapuram, May 20 (PTI): The engine of an Assam-bound train derailed early today near Kanyakumari due to a landslip caused by heavy rains though no one was injured in the mishap. Train services in the single line section between Nagercoil and Thiruvananthapuram Central have been affected due to derailment of Kanyakumari-Dibrugarh Express. "The train had left Kanyakumari at 2300 hrs last night and got derailed after passing Eraniel station at 0110 hrs today due to landslip," a Southern Railway press release said. A pair of engine wheels slipped from the track due to landslip after heavy rain in the region. No casualties has been reported, the release said, adding, Divisional Railway Manager and restoration team are at the spot.
