Six KPLT militants killed in encounter
DIPHU, MAY 14 (PTI): Six militants of Karbi Peoples' Liberation Tigers (KPLT), including its self-styled Commander-in-Chief, were killed in an encounter with security forces in Assam's Karbi Anglong district on, police said. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the army and police, launched an operation in Singhason Hill area under Manja police station and six militants were killed in the ensuing encounter, they said. The deceased include KPLT commander-in-chief Kangthro while others are yet to be identified, police stated. Five weapons of the AK series, 7mm pistols and SLRs along with a huge cache of ammunitions and medicines were recovered from the slain militants, they claimed.
Buddha Jayanti celebrated in northeast
Agartala/Itanagar, May 14 (IANS): Thousands of devotees at monasteries and temples in northeast India on Wednesday offered prayers on the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha. Millions of people take part in prayer ceremonies in the memory of the birth, enlightenment and passing away of Lord Buddha over 25 centuries ago. Among the tribals in northeast India, Chakma, Mog, Uchoi and Barua tribes follow Buddhism. "Lord Buddha made humanity his religion. This has motivated thousands of people to follow his teachings," said Srota Ranjan Khisa, Chakma tribal and editor of a local newspaper. On this day, Buddhists along with people from other religions gather in monasteries and temples and pray for peace. Benuban Vihar monastery in Agartala is considered one of the important pilgrim centres of Buddhism in northeast India. "It is not only for the Buddhists but for all those who believe in Buddhism. People belonging to Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim and Christian faiths participate here," said Khisa.
AAMEF welcomes SC directive for CBI probe into Saradha scam
Guwahati, May 14 (PTI): The All Assam Media Employees Federation today welcomed Supreme Court's directive for a CBI probe into the multi-crore Saradha scam in Assam, West Bengal, Odisha and Tripura and appealed for compensation for media employees of the group. More than thousand media employees in eastern India, who worked for newspapers and news channels owned by Saradha group of companies, suddenly lost their jobs after the collapse of the group in April, 2013, a statement by AAMEF said here. The statement said that most of them did not receive their salaries for two to three months before the closure. AAMEF, an umbrella organization of various Assam-based media organizations, appealed to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for taking personal interest in compensating the media employees.
Five detained for disturbing peace in Meghalaya
Shillong, May 14 (PTI): Five youth have been detained for allegedly trying to disturb peace after they were found conducting certain rituals in a graveyard at Tura, police said on Wednesday. The youth have been detained under Section 144 (unlawful assembly) and Section 188 (disobedience to order). Various Christian groups have been warning that some people, especially the young, have taken to conduct of such unwanted rituals. Taking note of the practice, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has asked the district administration and the police to keep an eye on the phenomenon. "Church members and all like-minded people will be involved in an exercise to root out the presence of such characters," Sangma said.

According to a press release received here, the polyclinic is one of 426 polyclinics that are providing quality healthcare to ex-servicemen all across the country. Major General Sunil Srivastava, VSM, GOC, inaugurated the polyclinic which will provide free healthcare to ex-servicemen close to their homes, North of Brahmaputra. The scheme benefits the ex-servicemen and their dependents by providing them comprehensive healthcare, including referrals to super-specialty hospitals.
