Former Arunachal Minister in coma
ITANAGAR, APRIL 28 (PTI): Former social welfare, woman and child development minister Newlai Tingkhatra has been admitted in Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon (Delhi) after he suffered a stroke on Thursday last, family sources said. Tingkhatra's condition was stated to be critical and was kept on life-support system in the ICU ward of the hospital, they said adding, he was reportedly in a coma after a massive heart attack causing brain hemorrhage. Tingkhatra, who had contested the April 9 Assembly elections from Kanubari constituency in Longding district on aCongress ticket, was previously admitted at Aditya Hospital in Dibrugarh (Assam) for treatment, but was referred to Medanta Hospital, the sources added.
AMAND conducts seminar on legal awareness
IMPHAL, April 28 (NNN): The Association of Manipuri Diaspora (AMAND), Pune organized a one day Legal Awareness Interactive Session with BI Talekar (Advocate) as the Legal Advisor yesterday at the Officers' Mess, R&DE(Engs), Pune. The main motive to organize this interactive session is to educate on relevant legal matters so as to be aware of rights and issues related to social justice. A good number of senior members of AMAND and students' representatives were present in the interactive session. Talekar gave a brief account of the societal and legal issues related with accidents, hit and run cases, rape, molestation cases and racial discrimination on different communities. Related IPC and CrPC acts were also discussed during the session. The session was coordinated by Warrant Officer T. Pakasana Singh (Retd). The Association of Manipuri Diaspora (AMAND) Pune is a non-profit, non-government community organization founded by Manipuri professionals residing in and around Pune. The Association aims at providing a common platform for Manipuris, irrespective of their caste, creed and religion, for propagating awareness on rights and issues related to social justice, with a goal to enhance communal harmony and national integration through fair practices. The association was founded on September 2011 and is registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 at Pune, Maharashtra.
Army evacuates stranded tourists in Sikkim
Gangtok, April 28 (PTI): Around 2,000 tourists stranded at Thegu in East Sikkim due to sudden snowfall were rescued and evacuated by the Army personnel of Black Cat Division, Army said on Monday. An Army press release said that 250 tourist vehicles with around 2,000 tourists were stranded at Thegu, below Nathu La, due to unexpected and sudden snowfall on Saturday. Troops stationed nearby, quickly rose to the occasion and helped to push the tourist vehicles across the steep slopes and rescued the tourists. The weather deteriorated further in the evening and despite heavy snowfall and hailstorm, the troops cleared all the tourist vehicles by 7 pm on Saturday, the release said, adding all the tourists safely returned to Gangtok by nightfall.
Arunachal mountaineer calls of Everest expedition
ITANAGAR, APRIL 28 (PTI): Ace mountaineer from Arunachal Pradesh Anshu Jamsenpa has called off her Everest expedition because of perilous conditions resulting from the avalanche which killed 16 sherpas recently. "I am leaving the Everest Base Camp. I have explored every option and can find no way to safely continue the expedition, hence postponing the world record attempt till next season," Anshu said after calling off the expedition yesterday. She said that she would climb a couple of other peaks in theNepal Himalayas before returning to India. Anshu, a mother of two children, had scaled the world's highest peak twice in a gap of ten days earlier. This was her second attempt for another double ascent.
Gogoi reviews situation following low rainfall
GUWAHATI, APRIL 28 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Monday reviewed the situation in the wake of low rainfall in the state and asked the concerned departments to come up with both short and long term measures to mitigate the issue. In a high-level meeting, Gogoi asked the Agriculture Department to draw up a contingency plan if the situation arising out of low rainfall persists in the state. The chief minister directed the Power Department to take immediate measures to improve the power position by procuring additional power from other sources. He also instructed the Irrigation and Public Health Engineering Departments to take appropriate steps to deal with the situation arising out of low rainfall, sources said. Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla was also asked to monitor the situation and to brief the chief minister at regular intervals. The meeting was attended among others by Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi, Additional Chief Secretary Agriculture and Irrigation V K Piparsenia, Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd Chairman Rajiv Yadav and Power Commissioner and Secretary Anurag Goel.
