Imphal, October 29 (NNN): Noted Liangmai artist Dee Abonmai alias Digommang passed away on Saturday after a brief illness in Imphal. He was 58. The funeral of the departed artist was held today at Tamei in Tamenglong district.
Dee Abonmai was a singer, composer, lyricist, actor and director. He was also a school teacher and an evangelist. His songs are mostly on social ills.
In an exclusive interview with Newmai News Network in 2009, (L) Dee Abonmai, who hailed from Lamlaba, a hamlet under Tamei sub-division of Tamenglong district, had talked about his hardship while making digital films.
"Cinema is a vital medium that influences our society and I have taken up this profession armed with almost nothing because I want to eradicate social ailments through this medium," Dee Abonmai had to say in the same interview.
Dee Abonmai had cited that on one occasion he was watching a Hindi movie in 1974 when “I realised the powerful effect of cinema”, adding, "Though I did not understand a word of Hindi but I could grasp by then the theme of the particular cinema I was watching on that day and realised how effective a cinema could be”.
"After that incident I thought of making dramas atleast since making a film was something impossible in those days".
According to the late artist, since he could not afford to hire lyricists and composer, he did it himself for his films.
Rangkang (Money), Wangsune Kariating (The Spring Season), and Mikdui (Tears) are some of the notable digital films made by late Dee Abonmai.
