Now Rengmas join reservation chorus

Kohima, July 21 (MExN):  Following the recent demand for job reservation in some districts, the Rengma Students’ Union has now joined the demand for job reservation from the state government.   According to the union, 80% of all gazette (group A &B) posts under the state government are reserved for Naga indigenous tribes of Nagaland. Out of which 33% is reserved for “backward” tribes. Of the remaining, 47% is open to all other Naga Tribes including Kuki, Kachari, Mikhiri and Garos stated Zentilo Tep, RSU’s president.

He highlighted that candidates, particularly from the Angami, Lotha, Rengma, Sema and Ao tribes have the opportunity to compete within the 47% reserved for indigenous inhabitant category. “Rengma tribe have been competing in this 47% reserved post since the past years but unfortunately none of the Rengmas could come out in any NPSC Exam conducted from 1989 till 2004 (15 years)” it stated.

Citing a 2004 Government notification where the Pochurys were included in the “backward” Zentilo Tep affirmed that Rengmas, having insignificant representation in the services were denied of the benefits and that the partial modification has been existing till date, when it is actually notified that it remains only up to December 31, 1987.

“The RSU have submitted its representation to the State Government as well as a reminder in this regard but till today, no concrete action has been taken up by the government” the release added and further demanded that the tribe should be included in the backward category or unrepresented tribe with certain reservation in terms of job opportunity. Maintaining that since the main purpose of reservation is to give a fair representation to every tribe in government service, the union urged that it’s high time for the Government to take corrective steps and re-examine the reservation policy. This way no tribe is deprived of its rights but would have equal opportunity in the Government.
