Sibsagar (Assam), April 7 (MExN): The Sibsagar Press Club (SPC) today celebrated its 25th anniversary at Sibsagar Town Hall which was attended by a host of present and past journalists and also by members of the Nagaland Press Association (NPA) here today.
The Sibsagar Press Association, which was formed in the year 1993, is said to be one of the most versatile press clubs in Assam. NPA president, K Temjen Jamir, who is also the editor of Tir Yimyim, an Ao language daily, was the special guest on the occasion. He was accompanied by a strong team of NPA members from Kohima, Dimapur and Mokokchung districts.
While speaking at the programme, the NPA president congratulated the Sibsagar Press Club and termed it as a great achievement. He said that Assam has a large number of media personnel who have been contributing a lot to the uplift of the society and building public opinion. In this connection, he pointed out that the press as the Fourth Estate in a democratic set-up has the bounden duty to discharge their duties for building the society and nation.
“Any misinformation from our part may not only ruin the lives of many, but also will prove detrimental to the society,” said K Temjen.
He said that the press clubs are the platforms where journalists come together share their opinions and chalk out their future course of life; therefore, he asserted that ‘these platforms’ should be utilized for the good for building the society and the nation and not otherwise.
While pointing out the age-old relationship between Assam and Nagaland, K Temjen said that the bond shared by the Assamese and Naga people has passed on for generations and centuries. He lamented that ‘although politically there may be differences over certain issues’, the NPA president strongly asserted for the ‘media of both the states can play important role to resolve issues, be it political, social or geographical, by building positive public opinion and consensus so that the matter is rested once and for all’.
In this regard, K Temjen called for building strong relations between the media personnel of Assam and Nagaland through regular meeting by visiting each other states, sharing their thoughts and concerns with each other for the betterment of the society. He further asserted that the entire media fraternity of the northeast region to come together for a common cause since the ‘northeast region needs peace, development and growth for the people to prosper’.
“The media personnel in the northeastern states can only help in shedding the negative image of the region and project it as a destination of people who have historical and traditional rights which needs to be protected and preserved,” said the NPA president.
Meanwhile, the president of the SPC Dr Mahanta welcomed the NPA president’s speech and at the same time highly appreciated the Nagaland press fraternity for joining in the silver jubilee celebration.
A host of retired and present working journalists in Assam attended the programme. Sibsagar Deputy Commissioner, ONGC Executive Director SD Maske and others joined in the celebration.
