NPCB directs firms to register for waste management

Dimapur, March 21 (MExN): The Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) has issued a notice directing all packaged drinking water plants, compostable plastic carry bag manufacturers, importers of plastic packaging, brand owners, and plastic waste processing units operating in Nagaland to register on the Centralized Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Portal developed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The portal can be accessed through the CPCB website at cpcb.nic.in under the “Important Links” section for the registration of Producers, Importers, and Brand Owners (PIBOs) and Plastic Waste Processors (PWPs) under the Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules.

The directive follows the amendments to the Plastic Waste Management Rules, notified on July 6, 2022, which state that environmental compensation will be levied under the "polluter pays" principle on those failing to comply with the rules. The compensation will be imposed as per guidelines set by the CPCB.

Additionally, industries that extract groundwater have been directed to install flow meters to monitor water usage. The NPCB has warned that action will be taken against non-complying units under relevant sections of environmental laws and regulations.

For further information or assistance with the EPR Portal registration, stakeholders can contact the NPCB at 7005239265 or 8732050834.
