DIMAPUR, May 30 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has expressed “aghast” at the assassination attempt on the life of Imtizungla Jamir (Rtd.) Registrar of Co-operative Society by one Mr. Worhsim (Ashim) Tangkhul and his accomplice on May 27 at Kohima. “No word is sufficient to condemn such ghastly act on a woman. The culprits had committed the crime of highest degree and caused a deep scar on the modesty of the fairer sex. Men that have no respect for their own mothers have no place in civilized society. Condemnation by words however harsh can’t heal the injury”, stated a press note issued by the Media Cell, NPCC.
The Nagaland Congress stated that the incident had proved beyond doubt, as also expressed by various NGOs and Civil Societies that the citizens, particularly the vulnerable women and children are no longer safe in their own homes. “The Govt. of the day has miserably failed to protect the lives and properties of its citizens. Fact of the matter is that; what security can the citizens expect from a government wherein, its Home Minister talks like a rebel leader”? stated the press note from the NPCC.
“Is this what the Home Minister called most peaceful law and order situation in the country? For a Home Minister that has no hesitation to admit his errors in public but refused to own moral responsibility, it won’t be a surprise if the incident is brushed aside as another stray/isolated incident or dismiss the opposition’s voice as politically motivated”, stated the press note. Pointing out that the “public will come to know the worth of the Govt. from its action taken report”, the NPCC stated that “taking over the case by outside agencies would only mean non-existence of the popular Govt”.
The NPCC has appealed to all concerned citizens to go beyond condemnation by words but see, as to where the onus of responsibility should be fixed. “A government that had expressed its helplessness in the past and shifted the blame on public alleging that the public does not co-operate in sharing information can’t be relied upon for citizens’ security”, the NPCC stated while adding that “needlessly to say, the citizens of Nagaland know very well whether the situation the people are in, is conducive for sharing information”. The press note further went on to state that if the Govt. of the day is of the “opinion that the publics are not co-operating with its government, it can only mean that it has lost public confidence”.
