NPCC slams BJP over ‘Double Standards’ on protest and democracy

Dimapur, February 22 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Sunday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of political hypocrisy, alleging double standards in its stance on democracy and public protest.

In a press statement issued by Andrew Humtsoe, Chairman, Media & Publicity, NPCC, the party said it was “deeply ironic” that the BJP, which it alleged had disrupted national events in the past for political mileage, was now delivering lectures on democracy and peaceful protest.

Referring to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, the NPCC claimed that the BJP and its affiliates had staged protests that embarrassed India on an international platform.

The statement further questioned the authenticity of a recent “Made in India” technological showcase, alleging that a Chinese robot was presented as indigenous innovation. It said that when questions were raised on the issue, the BJP “suddenly claimed moral authority” and accused others of being undemocratic.

Describing this as “selective outrage,” the NPCC alleged that it exposed “sheer political hypocrisy.”

The party said the protest carried out by the Indian Youth Congress was aimed at demanding transparency and accountability, which it termed as fundamental democratic values. “If the government truly stands for Make in India, then honesty must come before propaganda,” the statement said.

The NPCC also criticised BJP leaders for staging demonstrations in front of the Indian National Congress Bhavan in Dimapur and raising slogans, urging them instead to clarify the facts surrounding the exhibition.

“Democracy is not about noise; it is about responsibility,” the statement said, adding that political double standards cannot replace truth and that the people are capable of distinguishing between “genuine accountability and manufactured outrage.”
