Mokokchung | May 13 : The Congress bastion, 26 Aonglenden Assembly Constituency fell to the Naga Peoples’ Front today as their candidate Toshipokba defeated Congress veteran Dr.SC Jamir by a margin of 1320 votes. For almost 30 years, the constituency had remained a stronghold of the Congress. Bye-election to the said constituency was held of May 7 last and the word was already going about that the NPF would win this time round. Counting of votes started from 8:00 o’clock in the morning at Town Hall, Mokokchung. Returning Officer & Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung declared the result around 9: 30 in the morning.
NPF Mokokchung Division arranged a felicitation program at its frontal office and later had a public meeting at Ungma village to celebrate their victory. During the victory celebration at Ungma community hall, Nagaland Home Minister, Imkong L Imchen said that the NPF have finally shaken down the very foundation of the Congress party in the state. “It is because of the Naga Issue we won the bye-election today,” said Imchen during his brief speech. Imkong also said that the electorate of Aonglenden has placed confidence on the NPF under the leadership of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio by supporting during the recent bye-election.
Imchen also assured the people that now out of 10 MLAs in the district, there are now five in the ruling party.
Aonglenden constituency consist of three villages –Ungma, Kupza and Settsü and four wards under Mokokchung town –Sangtemla, Arkong, Dilong and Marepkong. Ungma village was the decider during this bye-election. With a total of 6071 voters in Ungma village, Congress could manage only 2075 votes which turned the table in favour of Toshipokba. Aonglenden Assembly Constituency consist of 12,762 voters – 6466 male and 6296 female voters, out of which 6265 voters voted for the NPF while Congress managed to get 4945 votes. There were 147 postal ballots cast, out of which Toshipokba won 97.
