NPF party to go Pan-Naga

It is now “Naga Peoples’ Front”

Kohima, July 28 (MExN): In taking a giant step forward, the Nagaland Peoples’ Front party today changed its nomenclature to “Naga Peoples’ Front” and is all set to spread its wings to the neighboring states of the Northeast – or rather, all Naga-inhabited areas. The party today approved an amendment of the NPF’s constitution. According to the party, the move  was necessitated by the expansion of activities to the neighboring states.

Terming the step as a new milestone in Naga politics, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said much consultation and exhaustive discussions followed and the party felt the need to spread its wings beyond the boundaries of Nagaland state and reach out to the Naga brethren living in Naga contiguous areas. He said such a step is not meant to merely make electoral gains but also  has the more ‘noble’ aim of unifying and bringing together the Nagas who have always longed to live together as one family.

The chief minister insisted that the NPF, being “the only regional party with a historic past,” felt it a responsibility to respond to the call of the people. The decision will mark a new chapter for Nagas throughout all Naga-inhabited areas, he said, and has sought the support of all sections.

Urging the party’s organization to extend cooperation to all the organs  of the government to deliver the goods to the people, Rio also appealed to the NPF’s rank and file to fully cooperate with the administration and police to maintain  peace and not to allow anti-social elements to disturb the hard-earned prevailing “peace.”

Also, the draft resolution of the NPF appreciated the electorate of the state for reposing confidence in the party in the recently-conducted Lok Sabha elections and by-elections in Dimapur, Tuensang Sadar-II and Chizami; it welcomed the ‘merger’ of the BJP with the NPF while also endorsing and congratulating the party’s leadership for the decision to extend “unconditional support”  to the UPA in New Delhi.

The eight-point resolution also welcomed the new Governor of Nagaland Gurbachan Jagat, who took oath of office today. The resolution then fully endorsed the decision of the party to ‘spread its wings’ to other states covering all Naga-inhabited areas.
