The Naga People's Front (NPF) will move the High Court to challenge Nagaland Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer’s ‘arbitrary’ verdict rejecting the party’s plea to disqualify its 7 rebel MLAs.

Following the NPF Legislature Party meeting on Wednesday, Leader of Opposition TR Zeliang told media persons that it has resolved to go to High court to make an appeal against the speaker’s judgment.

"We will take the consent of the president also," he added.

Zeliang said that the proceeding of the case “was done fairly” for the first time in the history of Nagaland Assembly. He said the speaker allowed both the parties to examine and cross-examine the witnesses (petitioners and respondents) and said “So, he (Speaker) has done fairly for the first of its kind which was never done in the past.”

Zeliang said that the speaker also invited both the parties — seven members each for a “joint hearing” and gave “ample time” for both parties to question each other and even allowed the petitioners and respondents to submit the affidavit and arguments made before the speaker, in written form.

“But, at the end of the day, he has to follow the advice of somebody so he has delivered the judgment arbitrarily,” Zeliang said while adding that “justice was not done to the petitioners.”

“We have decided to go to higher court against the speaker’s judgment,” he said further adding that it would do so after taking the consent of the party president.

Further, he said that the NPF Legislature party has authorised him to take the matter to the party for consent after which it move to the court with an appeal against the judgment of the speaker.

He also said that the meeting discussed various issues to be proposed for the forthcoming Assembly session which will commence on July 30. Among other things, he said the party would propose that the solution to Indo-Naga talks and COVID-19 related issues be taken up in the session.
