DIMAPUR, August 1 (MExN): The National People's Party (NPP) Nagaland State Unit has expressed deep concern over the reported detention of two Catholic nuns and three girls in Chhattisgarh, condemning the incident as a violation of constitutional values and religious freedom.
“This act of intimidation is a direct violation of constitutional values and religious freedom,” the NPP Nagaland said in a press statement issued by its media cell on August 1.
The party stated that it “firmly endorses the appeal made by our National President, Conrad K Sangma, to the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, calling for an immediate, fair, and impartial investigation into the matter and demanding that justice be served without bias.”
The statement also affirmed solidarity with the Christian minority community and reiterated the need to protect their rights and dignity. “We condemn any attempt to harass or criminalize individuals based on their faith and urge authorities to ensure such incidents are not repeated,” it said.
“We call for the immediate withdrawal of the fabricated charges against the nuns and for a reaffirmation of India’s commitment to justice, secularism, and the protection of the social and secular fabric of the nation,” the party added.
Meanwhile, the National People's Youth Front – Nagaland (NPYF), the youth wing of the NPP, also issued a separate statement condemning the same incident. It described the detention of the nuns as an “unacceptable breach of human dignity and our constitutional spirit” and urged both the Chhattisgarh Government and the Centre to act swiftly to uphold the rights of all communities.
“An attack on one faith is an attack on our shared humanity,” the NPYF asserted.
