NPP seeks urgent steps to safeguard Nagaland’s borders

KOHIMA, JULY 26 (MExN): The Nagaland unit of the National People’s Party (NPP) has expressed deep concern over the recent eviction drive carried out by the Assam Government, stating that it has triggered a fresh influx of undocumented migrants attempting to enter Nagaland. The party termed the situation as a serious threat to the state’s security, demographic composition, and cultural identity, and urged the Nagaland Government to treat the issue as a matter of utmost urgency.

In a press statement issued by its media cell, the NPP warned that several districts along the Nagaland-Assam border remain vulnerable due to porous and unmonitored entry points, which allow unregulated movement of migrant labourers into border towns and villages. It noted that the lack of stringent verification mechanisms and surveillance at check gates could result in illegal settlements and demographic shifts if not checked in time.

Multi-pronged approach
Calling for a multi-pronged approach, the party recommended the deployment of dedicated border patrol units with round-the-clock monitoring, installation of CCTV cameras and watchtowers, and the setting up of checkpoints at all critical entry routes. It also suggested enhanced coordination with Assam Police and Central forces to monitor cross-border movement more effectively.

The NPP further proposed a system of biometric registration and verification of all migrant workers entering the state, coupled with the enforcement of a work permit system backed by legal penalties against violators. It recommended periodic inspection drives in urban colonies and rural settlements to detect and prevent illegal habitation.
The party called on Village Councils, colony authorities, and local committees to form vigilance groups to monitor suspicious movements and collaborate with law enforcement agencies. It stressed the importance of awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the implications of illegal immigration and the role of communities in reporting such activities.

Establish STF under Home Dept
On the administrative front, the NPP urged the establishment of a Special Task Force under the Home Department to coordinate all anti-infiltration measures. It advocated strengthening and digitising the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system to improve tracking and enforcement, and called for strict penalties for individuals or organisations found to be employing or harbouring undocumented migrants.

In addition, the party suggested the deployment of drones and other real-time surveillance technologies along the border belts, along with the creation of a state-level migrant tracking database to strengthen monitoring efforts.

The NPP appealed to the Government of Nagaland to convene an urgent review meeting involving law enforcement agencies and border district officials. It called for the immediate issuance of directives to intensify verification at all entry points and sought greater inter-state and central coordination to prevent a worsening of the situation.

Reaffirming its commitment to supporting the state administration in safeguarding the interests of Nagaland and its people, the NPP said it remained ready to extend assistance in the implementation of the proposed measures.
