NRC on Mithun celebrates 25 years of existence

Dimapur, March 27 (MExN): The National Research Centre on Mithun (NRCM) celebrated 25 years of its existence on March 27 at Medziphema campus. Commemorating the celebration, NRCM organized interface meeting to discuss issues related to Mithun husbandry. The interface meeting was attended by high dignitaries, scientists from various institutes of NEH region, and state Veterinary & Animal Husbandry officials.

An exhibition was also organized, which were participated by NRCM, SASARD (Nagaland University), ICAR complex for NEH region (Nagaland Center), Development Association of Nagaland, Entrepreneurs Associate (Kohima), NABARD (Dimapur), Thermo-Fisher Scientific, SBI ADB (Medziphema) and Dimul (Dimapur) displaying their various organizational activities. During the inaugural address, Dr. C. Rajkhowa, Director, NRCM presented the overview of 25 years of journey since its inception in 1988; Dr. S.N.Puri stressed on processing mithun milk and producing various milk products and establishing neutraceutical values of mithun milk and meat products and their widespread popularization as rare value added products.

Dr. K.M.L. Pathak highlighted the achievements and technologies developed by NCRM during last 25 years including development of area specific mineral mixture, spent grain based feed blocks, artificial Insemination for mithun and Embryo Transfer calves produced by the institute. He applauded the collaborative efforts being undertaken by NRCM along with Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department of Nagaland for conservation and propagation of mithun in the region.  He further stressed on the need to take up the programmes with other mithun inhabiting states.  

Parliamentary Secretary Benjongliba Aier, who was present at the celebration, highlighted the socio cultural association of mithun in the tribal population of the state. He praised the efforts of NRCM in dissemination of technologies among the farmers for encouraging scientific mithun rearing practices.
 
Yitachu, parliamentary secretary, congratulated NRCM for its grand success in 25 years and acknowledged the sincere and hard work done by the scientists of NRCM. He thanked the director for involving policy makers in various programmes of the institute which helps them formulate appropriate policies and discuss the issues at the higher level. He raised his concern for the shrinking forests cover in the region, which is adversely affecting the mithun rearing in the region.

Meanwhile, Dr. S. Ayyappan, Director General of ICAR applauded the quality research articles published by scientific community of the institute in high impact international journals, while emphasizing on the need to expand the activities of institute in other Mithun rearing states.

During the event, a “Mithun based farming system” was also launched in 5 villages, namely Porba, Losami, Pholami, Thetsumi and Enhulumi in Phek district, which will be developed as model villages by NRCM in collaboration with Entrepreneurs Associate and Mithun Farmer Association of the region.
