At least 45 houses and six granaries were reportedly destroyed during an inferno which ravaged K Shan Longchan village in the Naga Self Administered Zone (NSAZ) of Myanmar on April 11.

The incident only came to light days after it had occurred due to the remoteness of the village location and with poor network connectivity. K Shan Longchan is located in the Northern region of NSAZ near to the border of Arunachal Pradesh and is a two-day journey on foot from Lahe township (capital of NSAZ).

The President of Eastern Naga Students Association (ENSA), Atimiu informed The Morung Express that they were informed of the fire incident by the villagers of Longchan three days after it had happened.

“Due to poor network connectivity we were only able to ascertain the facts of what had occurred after three to four days,” he said. The village originally had a total of 87 houses which suggests that 50% of the structures have been completely razed to the ground.

As per the reports of the villagers, he mentioned that the fire broke out during the day time when most of the villagers were out in the field.  They suspect that it could have occurred from a solar panel placed on top of a thatched house which quickly spread to the other structures nearby.

He also added that a morung of the village had been destroyed out of the 45 houses.

For provisions and much needed relief to the affected families, he stated that they have been stockpiling them for some days now. “When we have gathered enough, we will move out toward the village from Lahe,” he said.
