Dimapur, July 22 (MExN): The NSCN (IM) has expressed concern over the ongoing conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in Manipur, which has escalated since May 2023. In a press release issued by the MIP, the NSCN (IM) called for an end to the violence and harassment targeting Christians in the region.
The NSCN (IM) stated "though we have maintained neutrality, we have been cautiously following the day-to-day development." However, the group observed a "disturbing trend towards the Christians with harassment and physical assault by the local militant group Arambai Tengol."
The NSCN (IM) alleged: "It is an open secret who is behind the formation of Arambai Tengols. Such persons behind Arambai Tengol who hold or follow strong convictions or extreme principles to bring about fundamental socio-political reforms are already out in the manner that is most radical than anything else." The group emphasized that "violent extremism as followed by Arambai Tengol is a threat to peace and tolerance."
The NSCN (IM) declared its commitment to protecting Christians in Manipur. "It is therefore natural that NSCN should take the stand to guard the interest and safety of the Christians in Manipur," the NSCN (IM) asserted.
"NSCN would like to see the change of heart on the part of Arambai Tengol and not to treat the Christians as if to get rid of the dirt," it urged and reaffirmed its commitment to “peaceful co-existence of all religious groups in Manipur.”
