Dimapur: The NSCN-IM has made its stand in the Moangwati case clear. According to the outfit, the real picture was yet to emerge and the five accused presently in Police custody were being used as scapegoats. An NSCN-IM official, while talking to the Morung Express, said that the arrested cadres had been falsely implicated and that they had not been given an opportunity to clarify their position. He insisted that the statements made by the Police in this regard and published in the media had been misconstrued. The official termed as ‘bogus’ the statements that had come out in the media thus far. He therefore requested the people not to swallow the news readily but analyze and comprehend the case carefully. The official has asked the Police to come out with concrete and hard evidence to prove the guilt of the accused. He further asserted that the NSCN was in no way harboring criminals and that it would leave no stone unturned in its investigations.

While condemning the dastardly act perpetrated on the doctor, the NSCN leader affirmed that if found guilty, the outfit would not spare those involved in the crime and that justice would be meted out to those guilty regardless of rank and file. Referring to the NSCN’s position on the punishment of criminals he said, ‘No criminal has gone scot-free.’

An interesting point that the leader brought forward was his statement on why the Police were being tight-lipped about the polygraph test that Captain Kati of the outfit had undergone. The captain is under Police custody for his alleged involvement in the assassination attempt on Dr. Moangwati. He had earlier been taken to Chandigarh to undergo a lie-detection test which he had passed.

The official also reminded that the NSCN had earlier suggested the Police to carry a joint interrogation with the outfit. He alleged that the Police had not accepted the proposal as the ‘real truth’ would have emerged then. Reacting to the suggestion made by the Assistant Public Prosecutor, Dimapur, to hold a public opinion poll, the leader said that the statement was not acceptable as judgment could not be taken from the emotionally charged masses who had been brainwashed by the Police statements.

Meanwhile, Police sources when contacted, said that the accused had earlier given their confessional statements. Clarifying on the polygraph test that Captain Kati had undergone, a Police source revealed that polygraph tests were conducted only to give an edge to investigations.

It was further disclosed that the lie-detection test could not be effectively performed because of a language barrier that had arisen between the accused and the persons conducting the polygraph test in Chandigarh.
