In yet another violent incident within a week in Mon District leading to public casualty, a class 10 student, Mr. Achem Konyak of Govt High School Tizit was shot dead by NSCN (IM) cadres at Tizit Town at about 4.30 Pm yesterday. The incident occurred when a group of NSCN (IM) cadres presently camped at Tizit fired upon the ULFA cadres at BOC, Tizit Town. It was reported that four ULFA cadres who were moving around the BOC area near Police Station when NSCN (IM) cadres fired upon them and killed one on the spot, seriously injured two and took into their custody one of the ULFA cadre.

The two injured ULFA cadres are under police custody and being treated. The ULFA cadres were reportedly without any arms when the incident broke out.

It was reported that during the shooting by NSCN (IM) cadres upon the ULFA cadres, Lt. Achem Konyak, class 10 of Govt Higher School Tizit was on his way back from Namtola market after buying domestic goods, when he was shot at point blank distance and killed. The NSCN (IM) claimed that the deceased was hand-in-glove with the ULFA cadres and had been acting as their guide in the area. But Tizit people refuted that by saying that “they (ULFA) had no business or intention in harming or attempting upon NSCN (IM) in any way, so why would they use or why would Lt. Achem Konyak get involved in this dangerous affair as falsely claimed by NSCN (IM)?” “Achem was on his way from the market when he was intentionally shot by IM cadres and they are just trying to divert the whole matter by alleging that he was involved with ULFA cadres” one Tizit area official strongly condemned.
Reacting to this killing of the student, the public of Tizit, comprising of about 30 Villages today held a day long meeting and resolved to drive out NSCN (IM) Shongshon Battalion from Tizit Area, accusing that their presence had done untold harm to public lives and security. They further said that they will take up their own measures in dealing with the killers and that the Konyak public should not stop them from doing what ever they are about to do.

Mean while, KU and KSU condemned the murder and termed it as abominable and inhuman act of terrorist and further warned that such activities should not be left unpunished.
