Dimapur, April 13 (MExN): The NSCN-K (Ang Mai) and the Government of India (GoI) have been holding political dialogues and are likely to finalise an agreement for a bilateral ceasefire soon.
According to a press release from the MIP, NSCN-K (Ang Mai), received here, there have so far been three meetings in New Delhi at the Ceasefire Supervisory level, while the fourth round, led by its General Secretary Küghalu Mülatonu, was held on March 27 to discuss a bilateral ceasefire.
Both parties are actively exploring ways to end armed conflicts in the region through concerted efforts, it maintained.
The release further noted that an “understanding has been reached to hold the next meeting soon, preferably in a neutral third country.”
The Chairman, Vice Chairman, and the General Secretary are expected to join representatives from the GoI to discuss bilateral issues and more, it maintained.
Giving a background, the MIP release recalled that by 2023, the NSCN-K (Ang Mai) had been approached by Naga non-governmental organisations and other Indian agencies to enter into a ceasefire.
“The Nagas across the voluntary Indo-Myanmar border are filled with expectations and are closely observing the current developments,” it claimed, adding that the NSCN-K (Ang Mai) is the “only organisation with top leaders from both India and Myanmar.”
Currently, it maintains a bilateral ceasefire with the Myanmar Government in the Sagaing Region of the Naga Self-Administered Areas, and it is “presumed to be a continuation of the one initiated by the late S.S. Khaplang in 2014,” the release stated.
A similar agreement with the Indian side would not undermine the spirit of the 2001 framework, it added.
Accordingly, the release said that there is a possibility that the GoI and the NSCN-K (Ang Mai) will meet again, either in India or a third country.
However, due to the ongoing internal conflict in Myanmar and the aftermath of a recent earthquake, the top three leaders of the NSCN are unlikely to travel at this time, it added.
However, concerning the bilateral ceasefire with the GoI, Mülatonu is expected to finalise the agreement, accompanied by other members, it informed.
The Chairman, Vice Chairman, and General Secretary are likely to participate in political dialogue with either India or Myanmar in the future, it added.
