Dimapur, June 9 (MExN): The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) has strongly condemned the attempted rape of a minor girl by a 70-year-old man in Old Jalukie Sector ‘B’ under Peren District on May 31, calling the act appalling and demanding immediate legal action.
In a statement, NSCW Chairperson W. Nginyieih Konyak described the alleged perpetrator as a “habitual offender” and said the Commission is “greatly disturbed by the rising frequency of such crimes.”
“This is an appalling act that highlights the persistent threats to women’s and girl child’s safety and security even in their own locality—home, colony and villages,” Konyak said. “Such acts not only violate basic human rights but also undermine the safety and dignity of women in general.”
The Commission demanded a “swift and thorough investigation” and called for “strict punishment for the perpetrator.” It also urged the government and private sector to take “immediate measures to strengthen safety and security at workplaces.”
“We will continue to advocate for safer environments for women and remain committed to ensuring justice and accountability in all such cases,” the Commission stated. “It is unacceptable that women and girls continue to face such dangers while pursuing their education and careers.”
NSCW further called for the need for public awareness on the legal consequences of crimes against women and children, asserting that “every citizen must be sensitized” to deter such acts.
