NSCW, DAYO condemn molestation incident

KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, JUNE 20 (MExN): The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) has strongly condemned the molestation of a young woman by an auto-rickshaw driver and a co-passenger in an incident that occurred on June 15, 2025.

Calling it an appalling act, the Commission said the incident underscores the persistent threats to women’s safety and security in the state. “It is unacceptable that women and girls in the state continue to face such dangers even in broad daylight. This is not just a criminal act, but a grave violation of human rights, dignity, and women’s safety. Such heinous crimes will not be tolerated,” the NSCW stated.

The Commission said the incident is a clear sign that Nagaland can no longer be considered a safe zone for women and children.

Issuing a clarion call to the state government and law enforcement agencies, the NSCW urged swift and thorough investigation, strict punishment under the law, and immediate measures to strengthen the safety and security of women and girls in the state.

The Commission further appealed to law enforcement authorities to ensure that the safety of women and girls is prioritized without any lapses, and that such crimes do not go unpunished.

The Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation (DAYO) said the incident reflects a growing trend of crimes against women and called on civil society, tribal bodies, and the government to adopt stronger enforcement mechanisms to protect women’s safety and dignity.

DAYO also alleged that the accused had falsely assumed a tribal identity through his mother’s surname, violating Naga customary law. It warned that such identity misuse threatens the integrity of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system and indigenous rights. The group urged tribal hohos and traditional councils to address identity fraud seriously and reiterated its demand to uphold December 1, 1963, as the non-negotiable cut-off year for ILP implementation. DAYO demanded swift justice and strict punishment for the perpetrators under the law.
