NSCW spreads awareness on Poshan Maah

An awareness programme on Poshan Maah under the theme Improving Nutritional Status of girls and women was organized by Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) and supported by National Commission for Women (NCW) at NBCC Conference Hall, Bayavü Hill, Kohima today. 

W. Nginyeih Konyak Chairperson, NSCW while delivering the keynote address said that the Commission envisions Naga Women to be in a safe environment, knowledgeable about her rights and entitlements and pursuing her chosen occupation in life with great freedom.

While adding that the Commission said it has been formed to create State-wide awareness of women rights to access legal protection and redressal in situations where their rights are being violated and to reach Naga women from all backgrounds, rural or urban with information about the assistance and guidance available at NSCW.

Konyak said if further aims to enlighten Naga Women on equal opportunities in all areas of life and provide help to women victims of sexual harassment in the workplace, human trafficking, prostitution, blackmail, cyber-crimes and domestic abuse. 

Apart from that she said that the Commission also conducts various study and research among which are to codify the customary laws relating to Naga women, family institutions, social security for women and children and for protecting against children particularly girl children from being rendered as orphans. 

Apart from that it is entitled to study or research and report on the conditions of women in general, at private and public workplaces in Jails, remand homes and other places of custody to ameliorate their conditions against atrocities and Human Rights Violations.

Konyak also highlighted it also receives complaints relating to the status, conditions and affairs of women from individuals and bodies investigate them and report to the State Government. 

She pointed out that the Commission is empowered to investigate and enquire into subjects. 

The Nagaland State Commission for Women is devoted towards women empowerment and asserted that "since its inception the Commission has kept abreast of debates, developments and discourses on gender related issues at both national and international level so as to shed light at the State/local level."

Speaking of the importance of Poshan maah Konyak said it is also known as National Nutrition Month and an annual event in India which aims at improving ground level nutrition outcomes and encouraging behavioural changes. 

"This Poshan Abhiyan seeks to address the challenges of Malnutrition through a strategic shift in nutrition content and delivery by creating a convergent eco system," the Chairperson further said. 

Sohile Tep, Poshan Kohima District Coordinator, Social Welfare, spoke on Anemia and Nutrition, and Roseline Richa Dzüvichü, Reader, SCERT gave a presentation on Responsible Food Choice. 

During the second session, Good Health and Hygiene was taken up by Asünü Thong, Medical Superintendent, Kohima District TB & Chest Diseases Hospital 

Legal Awareness was imparted by Apila Sangtam, NSCW Legal Consultant. Programme was chaired by Kekhrienuo Meyase, Member, NSCW.  The vote of thanks was delivered by Akokla Longchar, member, NSCW.
