Chokihola (Assam) | July 5

The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has called for greater cooperation, trust and understanding among the student fraternities of North East Region to achieve the social and political aspirations of their respective communities. NSF president Mutsikhoyo Yhobu who was the guest of honour at the valedictory function 28th biennial general conference of the Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) held at Chokihola village with the theme “Anti-state terrorism and anti-State repression,” also said all students bodies of Northeast should work together to usher in peace and harmony in the region.

Dwelling on the socio-political unrest in the region, Yhobu said the common man has become victims in the hands of the various insurgent groups who profess to fight for the rights and dignity of the communities they claim to represent. He said the main reason of the unrest in Northeast was due to the fact that the militant and insurgent groups have failed to understand the policy of the Government of India.

“It is because the militant and insurgent groups have failed to understand the policy of the Government of India that we see unrest, infighting and ethnic conflict in the Northeast,” he said.

The NSF president said it was the responsibility of the student community to create awareness among the insurgent groups as well as public about the myriads techniques employed by various agencies inimical to the interests of the indigenous people inhabiting the Northeastern states.

Yhobu also said the influx of illegal migrants was another big headache for all the northeastern states.

Stressing on the need to protect and judiciously utilize the limited land and its resources of the indigenous people of the region, he said the student bodies of all Northeast states should jointly work out strategies to curb the menace. On the ongoing conflict between the Dimasas and Zeme Nagas in NC Hills, Assam, the NSF president appealed KSA to also undertake goodwill mission and to impress upon both the warring communities that dialogue, and not guns, is the best way to resolve the conflict.

KSA secretary Stalin Ingti who co-chaired the programme also proposed vote of thanks. The NSF president was accompanied by the federation’s social and cultural secretary Manyang Jamir, DNSU president Medovoyi, former NSF finance secretary Kapani Krichena and ANCSU officials.
