NSF demands review of 33% reservation policy

Dimapur, September 17 (MExN): Breaking its silence over the twenty five percent job reservation demanded by the Eastern Nagaland Students’ Federation (ENSF) and the subsequent approval by the State Cabinet, the Naga Students’ Federation today urged Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for a thorough review of the 33 percent job reservation for Backward Tribes in Nagaland.

A letter by the NSF to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, while putting forth ‘the grievances of the section of Naga society’ in regard to reservation policy, said that the recent Cabinet decision conceding to the ENSF demand has created mixed reactions causing serious imbalances.

“The recent Cabinet decision of conceding 25% reservation quota to the certain tribe has created a mixed reaction and upheaval among the section of Naga society causing imbalance.”

In this connection, the NSF pointed out that the existing policy of 33 percent reservation for the Backward Tribes in Nagaland is ideal to uplift and bring people who are educationally and socially backward. However, the NSF strongly asserted that it has been implemented in the State for the last more than thirty years without any major review, which was otherwise reviewing at the limitation of ten years to update in consonance.

“The NSF felt that the policy of BT reservation needs thorough review addressing with the change of time,” the Federation said and added that it is not fair to categorize the entire citizens of a linguistic division or tribe as backward or advance without looking into the grass root situation and empirical realities.

“The Government agreeing in principle of conceding the demand prior to the submission of the committee final report is not justified or will it served any purpose?” the Naga Students’ Federation said. In this regard, the NSF urged the Chief Minister to review the policy so as to serve the purpose of reservation in the best interest of all concern.
