The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) observed the 40th Martyrs’ Day on March 20 and honoured the sacrifices of the martyrs- late Kekuojalie Sachü of Kohima village and late Vikhozo Yhoshü of Kigwema village.
In a programme held at NSF Martyrs’ Park, Kohima, NSF President Mteisuding Heraang offered his respect and honour in remembrance of the two precious souls whose lives were laid down 40 years ago.
On March 20, 1986, when thousands of students came forward to extend their solidarity to the NSF to protest against the extension of the Disturbed Areas Act (DAA)- from the 5 km belt to 20 kms along the Indo-Burma border and the introduction of the Indian Police Service cadre in Nagaland (which focused on inducting non-Nagas), late Kekuojalie Sachü of Kohima village and late Vikhozo Yhoshü of Kigwema village succumbed to the indiscriminate firing upon the peaceful agitating students by the armed police forces from Alichen.
Heraang reaffirmed the Federation commitment to preserving their legacy
“This year marks the 40th year of the sacrifice of the two young and brave souls who lost their lives and their futures fighting for justice, dignity and rights of the Naga people,” said Diezevisie Nakhro, president, Angami Students Union (ASU) in a solitary message.
This sacrifice clearly serves as a call for unity among the Nagas through all regions, he said adding “The ASU remembers and remains indebted to the bereaved family for the sacrifices that the martyrs have left behind.”
He also called upon the Nagas to remember the martyrs and their sacrifices by honoring their legacy of patriotism, truth, courage and by planting seeds of oneness towards building a brighter tomorrow.
Let this sacrifice serve as a reminder to uphold the values of unity, justice and foster peace among ourselves, Nakhro added.
The programme was chaired by NSF speaker Marikho O Lerina while Dr. Chikhungo Puro, pastor Chakhesang Baptist Church Kohima pronounced invocation.
