Dimapur, February 14 (MExN): The Naga Students’ Federation has taken its fight to ‘cleansing’ the NPSC and also, the superannuation issues, to the Governor of Nagaland. A memorandum addressed to Governor Sankaranarayanan from the NSF appended by the Federation’s chief, Imchatoba Imchen, and general secretary Meijeing Gonmei, sought intervention into the two said issues.
Highlighting the backdrop of the tug-o-war over the Nagaland Public Service Commission corruption issue, the Federation stated that, a “heinous bribery scandal” in the commission surfaced in the month of May, 2005. The Federation had demanded a proper probe into the matter. Consequently, the need to revamp the whole system inevitably arose. “Thus, while in pursuance of the subject-matter with utmost support from the entire section of the people, the state government and the NSF arrived at an understanding on the 6th December, 2006 to form a High Power Committee led by Additional Chief Secretary Shri Laltara (IAS) including two members from the Civil Societies” the NSF informed. The committee submitted its report to the Cabinet for necessary action and approval. “However, the state Cabinet could not address the subject matter due to the lacuna of time, the nature of political instability in the state. Hence, the proposals of the High Power Committee remain unimplemented” the organization lamented to the Governor. The NSF also mentioned the recent ‘controversial’ exams of combined technical services and also the graduate teacher conducted by the commission. “…the integrity and the sanctity of the highest premier recruitment institute of the State have lost the confidence of the general public and the students’ community in particular to a farcical institution” the NSF stated.
Further, on the superannuation of state government employees, the NSF reminded the Governor that the issue remains unresolved as the former Cabinet could not address the students’ demand to implement the fixation of the length of service. It stated that in the last initiative, a joint meeting of state government employees associations and the students’ community was arranged by the Chief Secretary in December last year. The Chief Secretary gave an assurance that after reviewing the Guwahati High Court’s single bench judgment, the length of service will be maintained, “though we were not convince yet our due course of agitation for the time being remained in abeyance.”
In respect of these two unresolved matters, the Governor is appealed to by the NSF to intervene, ‘as a last resort’. “We trust that you will not leave any stone unturned on the matter of general interest for the betterment of our society as much as we do. We trust in amicable resolving issues without resorting to other means and we are fully convinced that your intervention will resolve the long standing issues amicable” the Federation hoped.
