The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has said that by next month work related to a ‘census’ of non-locals in Nagaland would commence. In collaboration with the non-local organisations, the students’ organization has already begun framing ‘modalities’ to identify illegal immigrants in Nagaland through the census. Once identified, illegal immigrants will be deported to their respective countries, according to the NSF.

Speaking to Newmai News Network this evening, NSF President Kelhouneizo Yhome said on March 10 that the organization had convened a meeting with non-local organisations in this regard. The NSF will announce various committees that are to undertake census on non-locals by next month, he said.

Rising cases of crimes committed by illegal immigrants in Nagaland has prompted the Naga Students’ Federation to identify illegal immigrants. Yhome said most of the illegal immigrants are from Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Last month, the NSF chief had stated that there are thousands of illegal immigrants in Nagaland who fled their countries and now settling in Nagaland. “Majority of the illegal immigrants in Nagaland are from Bangladesh,” according to the NSF chief. He had also said even the government of India has found it difficult to detect illegal immigrants in India. Through certain mechanisms in collaboration with the non-Naga organisations, illegal immigrants would be detected and driven out from Nagaland, he said.

Nagaland’s commercial hub, Dimapur city, is where a large number of illegal immigrants are concentrated. These illegal immigrants first infiltrated Assam from Bangladesh through the porous border regions. In search of work and business, the immigrants in turn come to Dimapur. These immigrants mostly engage in labour work and other manual activities. This has been going on for years and now immigrants are doing brisk business in Dimapur. They even construct their dwellings and farm in lands owned by Nagas by paying tax.
