Imphal, June 18 (NNN): The National School Safety Programme (NSSP), a centrally sponsored scheme, has covered 400 schools of Imphal East and Chandel districts in Manipur.
Under the programme, 200 schools in Imphal East and another 200 in Chandel have been covered with training on non-structural mitigation measures such as School Disaster Management Plan Preparation, according to a release from DIPR, Imphal.
Mock drill had also been conducted in all the 400 schools. A total of 800 teachers—400 each in Imphal East and Chandel—have been trained on the School Safety Programme. NSSP was implemented in the two districts during 2011-12 and 2012-13 with a fund allocation of over Rs 1.73 crore.
On the other hand, under the Other Disaster Management Programme (ODMP), the NSSP with 100 percent funding from the Central government is implemented by the National Disaster Management Authority in partnership with the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 43 selected districts in the country with the view to provide safe learning environment.
NSSP is handled by the Department of Relief and Disaster Management (R&DM), Government of Manipur. R&DM was set up as a separate department in 2006 as per the provision of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 in order to respond effectively to various disasters like earthquake, landslide, flood, forest fire and pest attacks.
