NSUP cautions on job frauds and exploitation

Pune, July 19 (MExN): The Naga Students’ Union Pune (NSUP) has urged fellow Nagas, especially youth and families across Nagaland, Manipur and Assam, to be cautiously aware of the surmounting cases of job frauds and exploitation.

With limited job opportunities in home states, most Naga youths migrate to several cities across India in search of employment out of which most people have reportedly been a victim to fraudulent job offers, illegal businesses and exploitative work environments. A press release from the NUSP stated that this issue, in some cases, has been a root cause for “irreversible damage to individuals, tarnishing the Naga community reputation, and even led to tragic, life threatening consequences.”

Additionally, one of the main reasons behind such incidents is lack of proper awareness and due diligence. The NSUP said that youths often move to unfamiliar cities relying on recommendations from peers and acquaintances, without verifying the legitimacy of the job, company, or recruiter. The union cautioned that peer references should not be the only source of validation.

The union also appealed to the parents, elders, and community leaders back in Nagaland to instigate proper guidance and counselling before sending off young youths to the cities.  It advocated cross-verification of opportunities through reliable and credible channels, including Naga or Northeast student/community unions in the respective cities.

The NSUP suggested that any individual planning to move to Pune for employment, higher education, or any other purpose may approach the students union for verification and support. They assured in corroborating the legitimacy of job offers or institutions, assisting in finding safe employment and admissions, and also providing protection and support through proper registration with the union.

The NUSP reported that various unfortunate incidents were encountered, particularly involving BPO jobs, fraudulent wellness centers and illegal Spa therapist placements, resulting in police raids.

On account of this issue, the NSUP has launched a Job & Welfare Awareness Drive aimed to protect Naga individuals based in Pune. The initiative, though launched in Pune, is meant to also encourage other Naga and Northeast students’ union across India to carry forward such drives.

“Let us work together to ensure that no more of our people fall victim to deceit and exploitation,” the NUSP stated.
