NTPA clarifies stand on encroachment of Railway land

DIMAPUR, JUNE 18 (MExN):  The Nagaland Tree Planters’ Association (NTPA) has issued a clarification in response to the rejoinder from the Railway Affected Landowners’ Association (RALOA) following its press statement dated June 15.

Acknowledging the concerns raised by RALOA, the NTPA stated that the term “compensated land” was used unintentionally and expressed regret for any misunderstanding caused. The Association clarified that its intention was to highlight the issue of encroached land earmarked for railway development, not to question the legitimacy of genuine landowners.

“It is an undeniable fact that large areas historically demarcated for and used by the Railways have been illegally encroached upon by private individuals and entities,” the NTPA said in the statement. These areas, which once included railway sidings, godowns, and service roads, have been built over, thereby disrupting operational functionality and impeding future development, it added.

Of particular concern, the NTPA noted, is the disappearance of the old goods loading point, historically referred to as ‘New-6’, which once extended nearly a kilometre and played a strategic role in regional transportation. The Association said the loss of such infrastructure underscores the urgency of addressing unauthorized occupation of railway land.

The NTPA maintained that its earlier statement was not intended to target or implicate any individual, group, or community. “Our focus remains on the preservation of public land, lawful development, and equitable solutions that respect both infrastructure growth and the rights of genuine landowners,” it said.

Reaffirming its stance against illegal encroachment, the NTPA urged the authorities to ensure fair, transparent, and inclusive planning in future development initiatives, and reiterated its commitment to sustainable progress that balances public infrastructure needs with community rights.
