NU hosts photography exhibition-cum-competition

Dimapur, September 14 (MExN): The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Nagaland University, organised a “Photography Exhibition cum Competition” on the theme “Through the Lens: Capturing Moments” at I. Ihoshe Kinimi Hall on September 12.

Er Yarenthung Ezung, Controller of Examinations, Nagaland University, was the Chief Guest at the event. Delivering the welcome address, Dr. Arjun Das, Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, highlighted the significance of photography as an art form and said the competition had brought together participants from different states showcasing their cultures and skills. He also noted that it was the first photography exhibition hosted by the department.

The guest speaker, Subhamoy Bhattacharjee, an independent photojournalist, media educator and researcher, traced the beginnings of photography to cave art and detailed its evolution to the present day. He said photography has “changed the mindset of people, exploring the world with different emotions.” In today’s changing world, he added, “photography has become an important tool of communication with significant contribution both in time, life and national geography.” He further observed that photography has evolved with science and technology, with artificial intelligence posing new challenges for photographers.

The Chief Guest thanked and encouraged the department to make the programme a regular annual feature. Quoting the adage “a picture speaks thousand of words,” he expressed delight and eagerness for the programme and future photography opportunities.

A musical interlude featured a duet performance by Deisica Snaitang and Deiphibanniewkor Babai. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Wapangsungla, Guest Faculty of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. Following the formal programme, the photography exhibition was inaugurated by Er. Ezung. The event showcased photographic talent and celebrated visual storytelling.
