Lumami, September 14 (MExN): Nagaland University celebrated the conclusion of Swachhata Pakhwada 2024 with a Valedictory Programme held at the Conference Hall of the Examination Building.
The ceremony featured Prof. M.K. Sinha, Dean of the School of Social Sciences, as the Guest of Honour, and was presided over by Priyanka Sengar, Internal Audit Officer at Nagaland University. Prof. Wangshimenla Jamir, Chairperson of the Swachhata Committee 2024, delivered the Introductory Speech.
In her address, Prof. Jamir highlighted the core mission of Swachhata Pakhwada: to promote environmental cleanliness. She detailed several initiatives undertaken by the university, including the Swachhata Pledge, cleanliness drives across departments and offices, and various competitions such as Best out of Waste and Clean Your Neighbourhood (Before-After Photographs).
Prof. Sinha's speech underscored the economic benefits of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. He discussed the initiative's role as a significant driver of the Indian economy, noting its impact on job creation, workforce health, and productivity.
Prof. Sinha also mentioned that the program has positively influenced Indian tourism, generating a revenue of 233.64 crore rupees.
Additionally, he pointed out that the initiative has led to reduced pollution, environmental degradation, and healthcare costs. Citing a World Bank estimate, he emphasized that the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has mitigated economic losses associated with poor sanitation, which costs India 6 percent of its GDP annually.
The event concluded with the announcement of competition winners by Peter Ki, PRO of Nagaland University. Statutory officers, faculty, administrative staff, and students attended the event, which ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Rumi Dhar from the Department of Law.
