NU: SASRD protests Kathua and Unnao rapes with candlelight vigil

Dimapur, April 15 (MExN): In a show of resentment against the rape cases in Jammu & Kashmir’s Kathua and Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao, the different student associations and authorities of Nagaland University: SASRD on April 15 carried out a candlelight march and peaceful protest.

The protest was chaired by Pezavitso Haralu, College Secretary, All India Agricultural Students’ Association and Convenor of Ph.D Forum, School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD).

A press statement from SASRD informed that Kedirisi Namdaw, President, Student’s Union, SASRD in his speech stated, “The people of Nagaland are much concerned for the justice of (the rape cases).”

It further quoted a message of Ashwini Ananda, Joint Secretary, North-East Zone of All India Agricultural Students’ Association, New Delhi, “There is a religion above all religions, that is the religion of humanity and we should understand it as soon as possible, otherwise humanity is on the verge of extinction and examples are already there.”

Professor M. Aleminla Ao, Pro-Vice Chancellor (i/c) of NU: SASRD expressed her deep condolence regarding the issue and also demanded justice.

Dr. Pankaj Shah, Assistant Professor, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding encouraged the students to take initiative in participating in such noble causes, while Dr AP Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Agronomy also supported the protest by his presence, the release stated.

The SASRD press statement asserted that it is high time for the human race to ask, “Do we need to become so communal that we leave the humanity nowhere? Where are we going and what kind of society are we making for us and our future generation?”

It added, “Whatever happened to (the Kathua victim) was communal but the impact of the communalism had shaken humanity. We should think once whether we are still human or are we becoming something else with the due course of time.”

The protest gathering, which ended with a prayer from Nzanmongi, President, Evangelical Union, was followed by a candlelight march by the students and the authorities carrying placards.

More than 200 students participated in the march to express their deep sorrow and solidarity, the statement added.
