The participants for the training comprised of students from all the ten departments under the NU, Meriema campus. The resource persons for the training were Dr. M Tseikha, District Project Officer, Land Resource Department who spoke on coffee and rubber plantation and Dr. Catherin Rutsa, HoD, Department of animal Production Management, SASRD, NU who spoke on livestock farming.

With a focus on going back to one’s roots and community, Dr. Rosemary Dzüvichü, HoD English and Career & Placement Cell mentioned that the workshop is being organised viewing the growing rate of unemployment in Nagaland and finding alternative skills.

Dr. Rosemary Dzüvichü informed about the activities and various departments in the University which presently consist of ten departments. Considering the present situation of Nagaland which produces thousands of graduates every year without employment avenues, the University hopes to empower the students through the training which will focus on the alternative source of livelihood mostly related to livestock and agri farming.

Moreover, with almost every Naga owning land, Dr. Dzüvichü viewed that such trainings can provide an alternative source of livelihood for students who will graduate soon. Further with the growing consumption needs and the lack of production in Nagaland, the essence of producing these needs were also highlighted. Dr. Rosemary Dzüvichü also reminded that the training will also be focusing on influencing policies. “If we are looking at impacting the society, as game changers, it all begins with policy makers,” mentioned Dzüvichü.

Prof. RC Gupta shared on the various schemes and programs under the Government of India on entrepreneurial skills and development where the need for more organic and indigenous production were pointed out. “The supply and demand must be in equilibrium,” said Prof. Gupta who expressed positivity on the vibrancy of the youth in India as well as Nagaland.   Reiterating on his often repeated emphasis on the importance of education and contributing to the society, Governor PB Acharya exhorted the students that the ultimate goal to attend university is not just to obtain a degree.

“Education empowers the young. And our youth are second to none.” said Acharya who pointed out that many Naga youth are migrating outside of Nagaland contributing to the thriving economy of other states, and therefore there is a need for the State to bring back and tap those skills and assets of the young in the State. “The strength of the chain is in the weakest link. We need to focus on the weakest areas,” said Acharya adding that Education, Electricity and Employment are necessary to bring an impact in the State.

“The universities have to be centers of knowledge,” asserted Acharya encouraging the students that their knowledge and empowerment not only for oneself or one’s family, but for the whole society. Acharya also lamented that in Nagaland ‘Our achievers are not givers’ and that ‘our political parties have failed miserably’ and further criticized the young for shying away from skill based or manual jobs. In this regard the Governor suggested the University to initiate more skill based trainings to the students.
