NU VC laments lack of eligible students for Engg

Kohima, September 9 (DIPR): The one-day State Level Science Seminar 2009 on the topic ‘Chandrayaan: Promises and Concerns’ was held at the Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima, on Wednesday. Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University, Prof. Krishnamoorty Kannan, graced the occasion as chief guest. The seminar was organised by the School Education department, Nagaland, in collaboration with the National Council of Science Museum, Ministry of Culture, government of India.

Speaking to the gathering, Prof. Kannan lamented that people in Nagaland were not getting much benefit in Science. He cited the example of the Engineering College, Nagaland University, where all the requisite seats were not filled up due to lack of enough eligible students. Kannan expressed hope that Nagaland’s students have the potential to study well in subjects like science and mathematics, while also citing the innate skill of the people for creative designs such as shawls and choosing colours.

Further, he stressed on the importance of basic infrastructure like drinking water, good transport connectivity, etc., in education. Citing the example of scientists who succeeded in life by sacrificing their time and comforts of life, Kannan challenged the large gathering of students to work hard and discipline themselves to achieve bigger life goals.

In his introductory note, Director for School Education, Nipusilie Angami, who also chaired the programme, said that without scientific knowledge life cannot survive in the present age. He urged the students to have a new zeal, ambition and objective in life. He also informed that the selected students would represent Nagaland at the national-level Science Seminar to be held on October 9, 2009.

Declaration of results and critical appreciation were presented by the panel of judges of the seminar. A special number was presented by students of Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima. Thirteen schools participated in the state-level Science Seminar, with eight boys and seven girls out of a total of 15 students from different districts.

1st –    Keneisavinuo Terhase, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Kohima 
2nd – Arenla Mar, Jubilee Memorial School, Mokokchung
3rd – Aosangla, Queen Mary Higher Secondary School, Mokokchung
