Deo Nukhu and others at the National Science Day in Kohima on February 28. Nagaland observed National Science Day by holding a seminar on ‘Chemistry in our lives.’
Kohima | February 28 : Nagaland along with the rest of the country today observed National Science Day by holding a seminar on “Chemistry in our lives” here at the LCS Building.
Speaking on the occasion, Deo Nukhu, advisor, science & technology, NER, art & culture stressed on the need to focus more in the field of science as it becomes part of everyone life.
Talking on the advancement of the society and modernization, he maintained that without science, we cannot progress in any field.Nukhu also stressed on the need to form more science society in Nagaland. He said till date, there is only one science society in Mokokchung and called for formation of the same in other districts too.He informed that under Nagaland Science & Technology Council, 2 projects in respect of Mini Hydro project is going on in Peren and Kohima district while one project was completed at Thüvopisü village in Phek district.
He also stated that an organic farming study is going on with the Rajasthan based science society.Science is such a vast subject, he said adding it covered every aspect of life.
Resource person Dr. T. Tiakaba Jamir, assistant professor, Kohima Science College, Jotsoma talked on “Chemistry is our life, our future.” He said that 2011 has been declared as the International Year of Chemistry. The objective, he said, is to increase the public appreciation of Chemistry in meeting world needs, to encourage interest in Chemistry among creative young people and to generate enthusiasm for creative future of Chemistry.
Chaired by William Kez, the seminar was attended by several school children from various schools.-
It may be recalled that the year 2011 marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Marie Sklodowska Curie, recognizing her discovery of the elements radium and polonium. Dr. Curie’s achievements continue to inspire students, especially women, to pursue careers in chemistry. The year 2011 also marks the one-hundred anniversary of the founding in Paris of the International Association of Chemical Societies to address the need for international cooperation among chemists and international standardization of nomenclature, atomic weights, physical constants, and scientific communication.
