Mokokchung, May 27 (MExN): Training of nurses from all health centres on mental health programme was held at IDSP conference hall, IMDH Mokokchung on May 25 and 26.
Dr. Medem, Medical Superintendent, IMDH Mokokchung in his welcome address encouraged the participants to be attentive in the training since mental health issue is new for all medical personnel, including Medical Officers.
Dr. Khriezothou Paphino, State Programme Officer on Mental Health, Directorate of Health & Family Welfare Kohima, who also attended the programme, challenged the participants to upscale their knowledge about mental health issues.
Dr. SS Akaba, Chief Medical Officer, Mokokchung also encouraged the nurses to give their best in the training.
Resource person Dr. Temsuyanger, DPO (RCH & UIP) & Nodal Officer, DMHP highlighted the roles of nurses in relation to mental health care. He mentioned that mental illness is a disease of the mind where thoughts and/or behavior gets disturbed, resulting in an inability to cope with life’s ordinary demands and routines, informed a press release.
Projected mental health problems in the district were discussed, where he stated accordingly turnout of patients at the DMHP OPD is low, which he attributed mainly to lack of awareness and misconceptions about mental illnesses. Different types of mental illnesses and their management were also discussed. He emphasized the need for early identification of mental illness cases in their respective areas and referral so that there is no delay in treatment initiation.
Resource person Ajungla, Psychiatric nurse, DMHP also highlighted about Anxiety and Mood disorder. She explained about the role of nurses in managing different types of mental illnesses, including violent patients. The importance of thorough assessment and psycho education of patients and relatives in follow ups were also discussed.
Altogether, 80 nurses from all health centres including sub centre, IMDH, Woodland Nursing Home and TB Hospital attended the training.
