NUSU (L) slams BSNL for poor net connectivity

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 28 (MExN): The Nagaland University Students Union Lumami (NUSU (L)) today expressed resentment over what it said was the “deplorable net connection services" provided to the Nagaland University, Head Quarters, Lumami by the state owned BSNL (Mokokchung circle). This, it stated, is hampering the academic growth of the students and disrupting the functioning of the university at large.

“In this era of hyper connected world where the whole country and the world in general is heading towards a digital world, it is melancholic that BSNL is dragging down and pushing the highest institute of education in the state, Nagaland University, towards a primitive age,” a press note from the union stated.

It informed that the Information & Publicity Secretary of behalf of NUSU (L) was in constant touch with the officials of BSNL apprising them of the inconveniences faced by the students and the whole university in general. However, it lamented that there was no improvement in their services.

The NUSU (L) said that internet connection in the university is not available daily. “It will be there for a day or two and unavailable for 3-4 days at a stretch; in addition the net speed is also very slow which was apprised to the officials of BSNL but no positive development was made on their end to rectify these,” it added.

The union also informed that this not only affects the headquarters at Lumami but also the campus at Medziphema (SASRD), since the connection goes from Lumami to SASRD, “thus paralyzing both the campuses.”

It added that the deplorable net services prevents the effective university functioning. “Every office, department and library has adequate number of computers each equipped by LAN cables but since net connection isn’t available most of the work is done manually,” it said.

The union meanwhile also expressed shock that verification of scholarship forms at the National Scholarship Portal is also affected by the deplorable internet service. Moreover, it said that the students are unable to access the internet facilities which they are entitled to; for instance access content through SWAYAM, National Digital Library etc., thus depriving the students and hampering their academics.

It reminded BSNL to improve its services at the earliest. It cautioned that failure to do so would result in further course of action “for which the concerned officials would be solely held responsible.”

It added that the union would accept “nothing short than the connection being available 24x7, 365 days, improved net speed in par with other central universities.”

Further, the NUSU (L) requested the university authority to blacklist BSNL and search for other remedial services and to speed up the ongoing Wi-Fi services work if the service provider is unable to fulfill its demands.
