Kohima, June 3 (MExN): The Nagaland University Teachers’ Association Kohima Campus, Meriema (NUTAK) has expressed dismay over the “intentional intimidation” meted out to the faculty members, staffs and students of Nagaland University, Lumami by some “miscreants” on May 19 and May 26.
A press release from NUTAK informed that the association in its general body meeting held on June 2 extended solidarity to the students, staffs and faculty members of Nagaland University regarding the incident.
“It is further disheartening that in spite of several representations by NUTA Lumami to the Nagaland University authority and the concerned District administration under which the incidents took place, the lack of redressal measures from the concerned University and District administration leads one to seriously doubt the safe and secure environment which is paramount to any academic institution in the country to flourish,” stated the release issued by NUTAK President, Prof. D Kuolie and General Secretary, Dr. Tiatoshi Jamir.
The NUTA Kohima Campus further condemned “such ulterior and calculated motives” and urged the authority of Nagaland University and the district administration to bring the absconding perpetrators to book.
In a separate statement, All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) condemned the May 19 incident on the National Highway between Mokokchung and Nagaland University, Lumami, where some people harassed and assaulted the faculty members, staff, and students of NU. ANCSU also expressed displeasure at the act of miscreants threatening an official of NU to withdraw the complaints on May 26.
“Such attitude is condemnable and intolerable in a peaceful society, after such an unfavourable incident,” stated a press release issued by ANCSU President, Zhoku Thuluo and General Secretary, Benjong Longchar. The students’ union further appealed to the authority concerned to book the accused.
Meanwhile, it extended support to the ongoing agitation of NUTA Lumami and expressed solidarity in their pursuit for justice. ANCSU further appealed to the administration concerned to take immediate action against the miscreants involved in the incident and also provide adequate security to the victims till justice is served and the people involved are put behind bars.
