Kohima, October 8 (MExN): Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) has informed of an incident where a consumer was cheated by a butcher in Kohima on October 8.
A press release from Press & Media Cell, NVCO recounted that a customer had bought pork for Rs. 400/- from a shop situated opposite Bethel Medical Centre, upper PWD, Kohima. He was supposed to buy 2 kg of pork costing Rs. 360/- (Rs. 180/- per kg as per KMC rate), but the butchers requested him to buy for Rs. 400/- for not having Rs. 40/- change.
At home in Jotsoma, when the customer weighed the meat he noticed a shortage, the release said. Thereafter, he brought the meat back to the butchers and the butchers admitted to a shortage of 500 gram of pork, it added.
The victim had reported the entire episode to the President of NVCO, Kezhokhoto Savi with a request to be published for public consumption so that consumers would not be taken for a ride in future, it further stated.
The NVCO condemned the incident and warned the butchers not to cheat the consumers be in weighing or charges in price. Meanwhile, it asked the staff of Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) to check all the butcher shops to ascertain whether they are running their shops with KMC trade license or not. It also asked the Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LMCP), Govt. of Nagaland to conduct surprise checking time to time without giving prior information to the butchers or others.
At the same time, NVCO questioned when the KMC will introduce compulsory use of electronic weighing machine in the state capital. Pointing out that today’s incident could not be taken to KMC or LMCP as it was a non-working day, it cautioned that next time similar case will be taken up with Police to make sure that the accused is punished under the criminal laws.
