The Naga Women's Union (NWU) has strongly condemned the incident that had happened on May 24 at Kwakeithel Bazaar near Asian Hospital in Imphal, where four of “our members, Tangkhul women hailing from Namrei village, Ukhrul district, Manipur, were assaulted by valley based mob consisting of both men and women on their way to the only airport in the state to travel to Mumbai”.

The NWU alleged that the four women were reportedly halted and attacked by forcibly dragged down from the vehicle by their hairs, their clothes including undergarments were ripped, stroked by iron rod and their luggage were destroyed.

The NWU said that the mob assaulted the four women even after identifying themselves as Tangkhuls. They were also threatened by armed personnel with a loaded gun to shoot if they moved. The women were traumatized physically and mentally and were treated at Health Care Diagnostic Centre, Mumbai, the NWU added.

The NWU then “vehemently” denounced the “bitter act” of attacking women with incriminating tools. “It is too ugly to learn that our state is ruled by mobs and women are unsafe even in broad daylight,” it said. The NWU also expressed dismay on the action of IPS officer, AK Jhalajit Singh, incharge of Central Control Room, 1st MR, Imphal, for claiming the incident as “it is absolutely false and there is no incident as such”.

The NWU then said seeing and hearing repeated excuses and apologies after the attack, “we now doubt if it was a deliberation to pacify and justify the barbaric act”.

The NWU then urged the concerned authority to prioritize bringing justice and carry out their duty responsibly and diligently in the good interest of the public at the earliest if the "rule of law" still prevails.
