Of ‘Silent Guns’ & ‘Anti-Naga’

Kavi  Swu  Assumi

At the rate that the various Naga Underground factions are labelling anyone that are even slightly apprehensive of their policies (no matter how flawed or anti-people, it may be) as “anti-Naga”, it’s a foregone conclusion that, there wouldn’t be many Naga intellectuals or organization standing in the way, for a dictator (a Maoist at that) to take over.

Time and time again, pen has been put to paper, condemning the various anti-people activities and deliberate disturbance of the peaceful atmosphere and disorderly conduct and misbehavior of the various UG factions resulting in the unwarranted and avoidable deaths of many innocent civilians, as well as, killings of our many brave soldiers, but it has always fallen on deaf ears and, our objections and mediations, just brushed off. But kudos to the move made by the KVYO and this is one which, I feel every organization should emulate so, as to send a clear signal to the various UG factions that, no organization, however, big it may be, isn’t above the people and that the love ingrained in our blood for the national workers shouldn’t not be taken advantage of.

Its a matter of concern to us all that, so many intellectuals that has tried to voice the opinion of the common public and many organization that has tried to oppose their high-handedness and  bring peace within their jurisdiction, has been  threatened with death  and, their voice silenced. Are we heading towards the kind of state, as depicted in George Orwell’s 1984 where, every citizen was to unquestionably follow the diktats of the state, regardless of whether, it  may be beneficial to him or not, by virtue of it, being from “higher authority”??? Going by the happenings, in the recent and not so recent past, I am inclined to think so, that we may be heading towards a “totalitarian state” and it makes me shudder to think about it. Its a shame that after more than 60 years of sweat and blood and tears and sorrows for a “free” state, we have come to a point where, it is considered “anti-Naga” for voicing out our secret desires and wishes.

As for me, I would rather live in a democratic society (even if its under a foreign rule) where, we have the right to criticize and question our leaders when they seem to be going against the wishes of the people or bring them down from their public offices, in case, they go corrupt and be able to voice out our opinions without fear of being threatened with dire consequences than be freed from a foreign rule and be “chained” in my own home.  KUKNALIM
